This Renaissance castle was built in 1630 and was owned for centuries by the Starhemberg family. During the past years it was turned into a classy hotel by its new owners, the Thiery family.

Food & beverage

The restaurant and its unique, world-famous terrace present a wonderful ambiance for your meal. Mario Bachhofer and his team will pamper you with local delicacies and international gourmet dishes. The wine cellar features a wide range of quality wines from the Wachau and other parts of Austria, as well as the well-known international brands. For festivities of all kinds, the restaurant can seat up to 120 persons.

Area information

Situated on a rock high above the Danube in the picturesque village of Dürnstein, which is famous for hosting King Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century, the castle is one of the most photographed buildings in Austria. The surrounding area invites you to taste Austria’s best wines, to ride your bike along the Danube, to hike in the hills or to visit one of the castles and museums in the region. Naturally, the Wachau can also be discovered from a boat. The Danube and its beaches are a popular recreation area. The proximity to Vienna gives you many opportunities even in bad weather. Dürnstein is also an ideal stopover on the way between Salzburg and Vienna.

Hotel Schloss Dürnstein enjoys a unique location on a rock high above the Danube River, at the heart of the Wachau World Heritage Site. Important information

Sufficient parking spaces are available in the 2 courtyards. Guests are permitted to drive through the pedestrian area to access the hotel at any time. You can always use the parking spaces in the front of the hotel. The gate leading to the courtyards is closed at night (22:00 to 08:00).

Travel information

The train station in Dürnstein is approximately 1.5 km away from the hotel. You can also use a taxi from the train station in Krems (approx. 7 km away from the hotel) if you do not wish to change trains in Krems.

This family-run 4-star hotel lies hidden between the vineyards of the Wachau, about 900 metres west of the historic town of Dürnstein. Gartenhotel & Weingut Pfeffel Dürnstein was completely renovated in early 2010. The highlight is the large panoramic spa area on the top floor, with 5 saunas, a heated outdoor pool, a big sun terrace, and views of the Danube Valley. Most rooms at Gartenhotel Pfeffel offer a balcony with views of the Danube. The restaurant has a terrace and serves Austrian cuisine with many homemade products such as herbs, honey, and eggs. Wine from the private vineyard, which can also be tasted in the wine bar, is served as well. Various events on the subject of wine are hosted regularly in the vineyard.
