Herculaneum ('Ercolano' in modern Italian) was an ancient Roman town named after the Greek hero Hercules, an indication that the city was of Greek origin. It is most famous for having been destroyed, along with Pompeii, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius beginning on August 24, AD 79. Before the catastrophic eruption, Vesuvius had been dormant for approximately 800 years and was no longer even recognised as a volcano. Thanks to the amazing excavation works that rediscovered the old town in a good state of preservation, you can gain a precise idea of life in the Roman era. We suggest that you visit the Temple of the Augustales, the famous Villa of the Papyri, and have a look at the wall paintings and mosaics (the most famous of which is Neptune and Amphitrite).

By Train from Naples-Piazza Garibaldi (20 minutes): Take the Circumvesuviana train towards either Sorrento, Poggiomarino or Torre Annunziata and get out at Ercolano. From the station, follow the signs for Scavi Archeologici (the excavations) and then turn left by the entrance - the hotel is 200 metres further along.
